Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

December 18th, 2009

This is the time of the year when more people well get sick from carbon monoxide poisoning than at any other time.  Many of these cases will end in a fatality.   Temporary heating on construction sites and home heating systems that are faulty are a major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon Monoxide is a gas produced when burning several types of fuel – gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal. When enhaled it replaces the oxygen in your blood.

If enough of your blood cells die the death follows.

You can’t see, smell or taste carbon monoxide and it can kill in minutes.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide include, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. If you have any of these symptoms call 911 right away and or go to the emergency room.

Prevention includes inspecting all fuel burning appliances each year prior to use. Check chimneys, flues, and vents to make sure they are in good shape, properly connected, and not blocked.

Never use a kerosene or propane heater in enclosed area, such as a camper, motor home, job trailer, tool trailer, enclosed scaffold, un-vented job sites, and tents. Never use a gas or charcoal grill indoors. Never us a gas oven to heat your home. Never close a fireplace or stove damper before the fire is out. Never use gas powered equipment in an enclosed area.

Use carbon monoxide detectors in your home, construction offices, storage trailers, or any enclosed area where heat is provided.
